Koo's

I have a lot of respect for the Koo family of Taiwan, and it's not just because they are billionaires. Though I admit the way they came to wealth was slightly opportunistic, they have demonstrated themselves to be full fledged Taiwanese, particuarly Mr. Koo Kwang-ming. Read his recent interview with the Taipei Times..one of the reporters was a high school and college friend of mine!

Haven't posted long entries recently. I've been a little too immersed in my work and courses. Quantum information science is just an amazing field. It's just fascinating. And the links to other disciplines, biology, computer science for example, could be or already are just as fascinating. But a lot of the work is still in the theory phase. We are definitely nowhere near a working quantum computer.

As for fun stuff, I saw Constantine on Friday and really liked it. The basic story is a topic that has been sort of around for centuries, you know good vs evil, man's will and his choice, though there are some interesting twists, such as Gabriel's role. But I was fascinated enough by the movie to come home and do some searching online, which led me to articles on Mesopotamian mythology and religion. So that's my next area of interest to read up on, in my free time, of which there is less and less!

M's first art installation

My son and I went exercising at the gym this morning (Feb. 2, 2019). We had physical and mental workouts, and I was full of pride to see him put together this exhibit. He called it, "Train." The work is abstract, with the cone symbolizing the engine and the ball can be pictured as "balls of steam" that roll out of the chimney or exhaust system! Train

3D metal printing

I've worked with stainless steel in the machine shop, and it isn't exactly the easiest metal to drill or lathe. So to be able to print it, wow. Another interesting company is Shapeways. Here's a video (not metal printing in this case though).
