Do you really want it?

Here's an article praising Taiwan's democracy. But democracy requires at least the loyalty of its people to the country itself. I get first hand information on how some legislators don't even have their heart in Taiwan. All they see is some day unification with China. This dictates how they want to formulate Taiwan's future, policies, budgets, etc. Don't they see that if you work hard, there's always hope? If you truly want something, and you know you deserve it, then you shouldn't let anything stand in the way until you get it? No one, not even a large neighbour, should make you feel like you don't deserve something. Certainly cutting the budget for the Science Park isn't going to help make Taiwan better. Perhaps some of these legislators do what they do so that they can say, "See, we were right about things. We need to unify with China!" I think that's so evil, and the people need to see through this veil of lies and vote them out of office.

I think the comment I made also applies to anything. If you want it, go for it. The tough question is, do you really want it?

Goodbyes

It's hard saying goodbye. A good friend of mine is leaving Duke to return to Paris. He was fed up with the physics program here, and after securing a position in France, decided to return home. In general how does one say goodbye? You don't really, especially if you're good friends. You just end up saying hello less often. At least that's my take. Unfortunately, more on goodbyes, it's goodbye to Duke's NCAA hopes for this year. We were outplayed by LSU. Sure the refs were really not entirely fair (from our point of view of course), but they closed our top scorer down. It was a fun run, and I enjoyed watching them play, especially since I thought they played such great team basketball, but it's over. Such a somber posti...
