Happy Chinese New Year!

It's the year of the Dog! Bow wow wow yippee yo yipee yay! I wish all the best in the coming year. Luck, success, and good health to my brother, dad and mom.

Yesterday the Taiwanese students association held a New Year Lunch at a local restaurant, Shanghai. The meal was good, though we had plenty of leftovers, and everyone seemed to have a really enjoyable time. As a member of the staff, I was part of the group of people responsible for organizing the event, and I'm really glad that we pulled it off so well. I think learning to organize events and bring people together is an important skill, whether when having a good time or when trying to do serious business.

Saturday was a brilliant day, especially in the afternoon. It was just gorgeous weather. Fortunately I didn't end up in the lab; instead I got to spend the afternoon with someone special and drink green bubble milk tea without the bubble.

In the evening, the staff and several other good friends got together at my apartment to watch Duke men's basketball vs. Virginia and attempt to finish off the load of food leftover (we didn't finish the food). Afterwards, most of us stuck around to chat and cross over the Chinese New Year together. It was a crazy and great night.

Below is me giving out Red Envelopes to our members!

It's hard saying goodbye. A good friend of mine is leaving Duke to return to Paris. He was fed up with the physics program here, and after securing a position in France, decided to return home. It's unfortunate that the department here could not do more to help, as he was genuinely bright; unfortunately he was suffering from depression, probably induced by the stresses of the PhD program as well as the dull boring city of Durham. In general how does one say goodbye? You don't really, especially if you're good friends. You just end up saying hello less often. At least that's my take. Unfortunately, more on goodbyes, it's goodbye to Duke's NCAA hopes for this year. We were outplayed by LSU. Sure the refs were really not entirely fair (from our point of view of course), but they closed our top scorer down. It was a fun run, and I enjoyed watching them play, especially since I thought they played such great team basketball, but it's over. Such a somber posti...
